2.4GHz high gain antenna Question

sorry if this is a stupid question but....

I have an Edimax Broadband router which works really well with no problems -
I added an Edimax Wireless Access Point (EW-7206APB) to allow access with my
laptop around the house etc - This also works very well.

Ok here is the question / problem....

A member of my family lives 100 metres away across a small "tree lined" road
and I wanted to link up across my wireless network. My laptop works part way
across the road and then the signal is too low etc (which I expected).

I have now bought a 2.4Ghz high gain antenna which boasts a distance of 3km
and is suppose to just screw into my access point. It connects okay and the
coverage is extended a bit further - but not very far - Do I need to do
anything else to configure this ?

I have put the antenna inside my attic - I do not want to put it outside
unless I really have to - Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

B

High Gain Omni directional? Or directional?
Your best bet would be a directional antenna.
If your AP has dual antennas one regular antenna can bring in local users,
while the other can be removed and replaced with a directional to bring in
the single distant user.

Thanks -

The Antenna is a Directional Panel Antenna. My Access point only has one
antenna.

If you really want decent range, you really need to put a directional
antenna at both ends. If you are trying to go thru trees, without true line
of site, you're probably still going to have problems. 2.4GHz has pretty
serious attenuation going thru water, which is a big component of leaves.

Mike

The Antenna is inside my attic and going across a roadway to a PC also in an
attic - will it go through the roof ok or should it be outside? The trees
are not too bad - just a few branches.

It matters what your roof is made of. If it's metal, no.
If it's something else, maybe. Probably worse when it's raining.
Best option is to try it in the attic
and outside the attic. Your laptop software should give you signal
strength indications you can use to compare.

Hi
speaking from experience of installing quite a few Cisco 350 Bridge systems,
outside is the best option. The less attenuation of the signal the better,
and like others have said, trees are a nightmare! What is the dBi rating of
the antennas that you are using?
You have 2 options, lift the antennas at both ends to clear the trees, or
remove the obstacle however some local agencies are not too happy about the
topsa of trees dissappearing overnight!!

Thanks for the reply

the dBi rating is 14dBi.

If going thru the roof works OK in the summer, you still might have a
problem in the winter when each roof has 1' of snow on it. You're
definitely much better off with the antenna on the outside of the house. I
would go for a location where you have clear line of site (under the trees'
canopy; height is not always the only answer).
