My 1Mbit/sec nominal link reports itself as 1152Kbits/sec.
With 8 bits per Byte that should give 144KBytes/sec, but some of those
bytes are used for IP overheads
http://www.adslguide.org/tools/speedtest.asp
reports Downstream 965 Kbps (120.6 KB/sec) 1042 Kbps (inc.
overheads)
That is fairly accurate - downloads regularly run at 120-125K Bytes/sec
from fast sites. Watching download manager (which uses multiple
connections to optimise the link) it shows short term bursts of up to
130-135KBytes/second.
Ethernet is NOT the constraint. A 10Mbit Ethernet will run up to 10
times the speed of a 1Mb ADSL line, a 100Mbit Ethernet link is even
faster. A Wireless link could be a constraint - it has lots of
overheads.
Check
http://www.broadbandreports.com/tweaks
to see if it thinks the settings on your machine need changing, and to
get some idea of any errors on the line.
