That's what I thought, then he said 'I have cable'
Or was that someone else..

I don't keep old messages..too much screen clutter.

Anyway whatever the realities its well known that Virgin ADSL is
probably the worst on the market except for AOL..

I said I have cable so what I get (in terms of speed) is
irrelevant - which it is. However I was <commenting> on ADSL
which is what the original post was about.

For the record I was one of the original beta testers for Virgin
dial-up so I have had 'connections' for quite a long time.
Fortunately I have never had to suffer the problems of ADSL
myself but through other members of the family and friends I have
had plenty of contact with it.

Actually for MOST of the time ADSL provides me with an astonishing
amount of bandwidth at a ridiculously low cost, and remarkable uptime.

But then I remember when a 64k internet unlimited connection would set
you back £5000 a year.

And the total internet bandwidth in the UK was less than I have to my
exchange today...

Virgin is good as long as you don't need to call them about anthing.

Except the ADSL offering is vile - throttled and capped to hell and beyond.

Cable is much better.

There isn't a cap as such, you can download as much data as you want
although heavy use will get throttled but only at peak times. Outside
that (e.g. at night) you're free to download as much as you want.

I'm quite happy with that since I do my downloads at night.

The distance as the crow flies is not particularly useful. All that
tells us is the minimum possible length of his phone line. In
practise it will be longer but, by how much, we don't know.

If you post your router stats as other posters have already said we
may be able to tell you more. If you don't know how to do this then
ask here and I'm sure someone will help.

FWIW: My line is 4.8Km long and I get over 2Mb/s most of the time.
