100mW PCMCIA Cards?

Hi,

According to the Radiocommunications Agency of the UK, the maximum permitted
EIRP (equivalent isotropic radiated power) permitted here and in most other
European Countries is 100mW.

My question is, are there any PCMCIA cards for laptops (or even USB devices)
available in this country which operate at 100mW and are therefore legal in
the UK? I cannot seem to find one.

If anybody knows of one that is compatible with external antenna connectors
also, please could you post it here?

To date, I have been unable to find one. Of course, there are cards such as
those by DemarcTech which hit 200mW but are illegal over here.

Any suggestions?

Cheers!

Richard.

The cisco 350 pcmcia are 100mW.

Though if you connect an antenna, you loose some in the coax, then depending on
the antenna itself, you can gain it back (or more).

100mW EIRP - it's the max effective isotropic radiated power by the antenna in
any one direction, not the power from the AP or card that matters.

You can have a 1000mW card, so long as the power radiated by the antenna is
still only 100mW in any one direction.

Some Cisco 350 pcmcia cards only have 50mw as their max. I have never had a
chance to see it this is a firmware or Cisco config utility issue. Anyone
shed any light on this?

Right.
So Cisco 350 PCMCIA and it's 2.2dBi antenna make a little more than 100mW.

The Senao cards (which are also available in the US as 200mW) are
available in Europe from a number of suppliers in a 100mW form.
They also have both external aerial connectors and good receive
sensitivity.

Well, I have a cisco 350 pcmcia card, and the config util allows you to adjust
the power from 1mW upto 100mW.

I suspect the 50mW limit would be a firmware issue, but not sure. It could even
be a hardware link on the pcb.

The difference between 50mW and 100mW is small anyhow, it'll only help when the
RF link is marginal.
