10 Seconds of Connection after start-up

I have an ABS wireless adapter that seems to work fine for 10 seconds.
Everytime I start the computer it will connect with Excellent wireless
connection, then disconnect on its own after 10 seconds and will not display
any wireless networks thereafter until I restart the computer and the process
starts all over again. From the event viewer I see two events that may be
causing this problem.

DHCP: A network error occurred when trying to send a message. The error code
is: A blocking operation was interrupted by a call to WSACancelBlockingCall. .

TCPIP: The system detected that network adapter 802.11g...PC Card - Packet
Scheduler Miniport was disconnected from the network, and the adapter's
network configuration has been released. If the network adapter was not
disconnected, this may indicate that it has malfunctioned. Please contact
your vendor for updated drivers.

Not sure what to do, I've tried multiple settings, at home, campus, library,
friend's house, all the same outcome. Thanks for any input!

Tried Safe mode with networking and the wireless did not work at all. My
other laptop in the home works fine with the wireless, it has a built-in
adapter. There are no updated drivers for the ABS PC card adapter. Tried
turing Windows firewall off, still does not work. The wireless network is an
open network so I don't anticipate any problems on that end. I'm thinking
the networking settings on the laptop are messed up somewhere. Not sure
where to go from here.
