10 day training period - reconnect once a day?

I'm 5 days through my 10 day training period after switching to ADSL Max
with Pipex. Before the new connection went live, Pipex told me that for the
first 10 days I needed to disconnect my router from the internet and
reconnect once a day to help them determine the best speed for my line.

In an attempt to solve a related problem I mentioned in another post (once
I've disconnected, the router won't reconnect until I switch it off and back
on) I phoned Pipex technical support today. This time they told me I
shouldn't have been disconnecting it deliberately at all, and I should leave
it connected constantly for the remaining 5 days.

So now I'm confused. Do I need to do anything at all during this 10 day
period? Will the fact I've been disconnecting every day so far affect the
speed I will get?

So far the speed has been pretty much constant. The router always syncs at
around 5800 - 6000Kbps and speed tests always show 4.8Mb.

Incorrect.

Correct.

Probably.

Ring Pipexs and cancel, they appear to be somewhat incompetent.

But the ADSLMAX training doesn't only happen during the first ten days,
it sets some initial values and gradually adjusts them, but after that
it continually takes account of conditions over the past ten days.

That's even if the training period kicks in at all - mine didn't for some
reason.
Also, when you get a line glitch, the rate can take a nose-dive for a few
days until the exchange equipment works its way back to a decent stable
speed.
Can be annoying but that's the way it works.

The web site doesn't say to do this nor does the welcome to 8MB email,
so I am guessing this is the advice of a customer service bod? Well
there's a lesson, and it is one that applies to most advice given by
customer service bods across all service organisations. :-)

I use a modem and turn the computer off most nights and it still settled
at 8125.

Perhaps because the training is about sync rates, not occasional
disconnects by the user?

Yes, you're right. I really should have learned this lesson by now!

That's encouraging. Hopefully I haven't screwed things up then. The speed
still hasn't changed from 4.8Mb which is about what I was expecting to end
up with - I thought it would go up and down a lot during the training period
though.
