I have one pc on my 2003 ad domain that cannot find the DC.

what I have done: checked the ip address, it is pointing to our
internal dns servers, re-installed the NIC, renewed the ip address,
used static Ip address. swapped cables, Deleted the old comptuer name
from AD but still not able to connect. Can't browse, net use or ping
our controllers.

Getting tired of troubleshooting so I bring the computer to our shop.
Re-install the OS and patched. Join the domain with no problem. Bring
the pc back to its orginal location and STILL not able to find
domain. Thinking is a cabling issue, I bring my laptop, plug into
the existing drop (using the same cable) and connect to the domain
with no problem!??

I'm at a lose at this point

Hello atain,

Sounds like a broken NIC for me. If another machine with the same cable on
the same switchport has no problems, change the NIC and try again.

Best regards

In your post it looks like you've tried this from 2 different physical
locations.
Is each location on a different subnet?
Does the PC get a DHCP address from both locations?
Or do you have to give it a static IP at one of the locations?

When you say "original location"; when there, can you ping the DC by IP
address?
Also, when at that location, are you sure the IP address that the PC gets is
on the same subnet as the DC?

Same subnet... We use DHCP but I also tired a static IP.. The nic
appears fine since it worked in another location. I also checked the
switch to make sure the port was not having any issues. Everything
appears fine.

Can the PC ping the DC by host name and IP address, at both locations?

Can you privide an Ipconfig /All for the PC and DC?

From everything you've said, it seems that these are the facts:

- at the original location the problem PC can't connect to the DC, but your
laptop can
- from the shop, the problem PC can connect to the DC

As I'm sure you've guessed, this is either a hardware problem, a switch or
router problem or, a DNS problem.

Since your laptop works at the original location, it seems like a DNS
problem with the problem PC. At least that's my guess. You never said if
the problem PC could ping by both host name and IP address at the original
location. Does it?
If it can't ping by host name, can it ping either it's primary or secondary
DNS server?

John,
The problem pc can ping the DC's by host name andd ip from our
shop. it cannot at it's orginal location. my laptop can ping from
both locations (using the problem pc's network drop at the original
location) It does appear to me to be a DNS issue but when it works
fine from our shop, I start looking at a possible switch issue...
but when my laptop connects... oooyyyy!!! I had some time and
did a fresh install TWICE on this computer just to see what would
happen (re-naming to something different and removing the old name
from AD).. Same results. THis is a lab so there are other pc's
connected to this same switch that are not having any problems
connecting to our domain. I obviously moved to different ports on
the switch with the same results.. Not really sure if it is hardware
related because.... it connects from our shop.

I'm pretty much stumped at this point.

it's very odd that a fresh install didn't fix the problem.

Did you check Event Viewer on the PC?

If I understand correctly, when the problem PC is at the original location,
it can NOT ping the DC by it's IP address.

If that is the case, it is indeed strange. Can it ping other PC's at the
location, by IP?
One other thing that comes to mind is the Link Speed/Duplex mode setting on
that NIC's properties. Check that, and try different settings.

John,
The problem pc can ping the DC's by host name andd ip from our
shop. it cannot at it's orginal location. my laptop can ping from
both locations (using the problem pc's network drop at the original
location) It does appear to me to be a DNS issue but when it works
fine from our shop, I start looking at a possible switch issue...
but when my laptop connects...
