Hi,

I have:

2000 DC with AD
2003 member server

Im running dcpromo on my 2003 member server and this member server is part
of a 2000 AD domain. The adprep commands have been run on the 2000 DC
successfully.

1. im told to make sure DNS is working. its working as its still using my
2000 DC as a DNS server. To enable 2003 member server to see AD is must use
the existing DNS server (i.e 2003 member server DNS point to 2000 DC). When
looking at the dcpromo instructions it suggests that the 2003 DC should look
at itself for DNS functions ....... is it just me or is this a contradiction
?

2. when running dcpromo im presented with two options. DOMAIN CONTROLLER
FOR NEW DOMAIN..... or ...... ADDITIONAL DOMAIN CONTROLLER ........ as im
upgrading AD from 2000 to 2003 should i select ADDITIONAL ? (i.e i still
need the same domain name).

thanks for any advice.
Scott

This would be if the Win 2k3 DC was the first DC in the domain and you are
installing DNS on it.
All AD clients MUST point to the DNS server for the domain. You are trying
to add the Win 2k3 server to the Win 2k domain, so point the Win 2k3 DC to
the Win 2k DC for DNS. Servers are AD clients also.

You want to choose additional DC.

If you were to choose new domain you would be creating a new domain. Even if
you name it the same domain name the SAM is different. Your clients will see
it as a new domain. You will have to add your clients to the new domain and
create new profiles, reset up permissions, and basically start the domain
from scratch. You would have a domain on the Win 2k server and a new domain
on the Win 2k3 server both with the same name. You would have a mess to
clean up from.
