Time to disband OFFC0N and replace it with
a duo of consumer rights and consumber interests group.

" Britain has an average broadband speed of 2.6 megabits per second (mbps),
compared with 2.8 in Slovakia."

Oh Crikey. That's all of SEVEN percent slower !

" The ITIF has warned that unless the government spends a bit of cash to speed
up the UK infrastructure "

It's not the GOVERNMENT's job to do any such thing.

It may not be the governments fault regarding spending cash, but it was the
(past) government who decided to sell off BT so that someone else took blame
for not upgrading the network. Selling off BT may have resulted in the state
of affairs we have today.

I very much doubt that 'Post Office Telephones' would have done a better job.

Neither of which are particularily good compared to "The Finns ... have an
average speed of 21.7mbps"

............................................

Right, any readers of this group from other EU countries care to comment on
the cost/facilities/performance of their ISP compared to the UK.

The may have done. When BT was sold off in the 80's, there was no other
telecoms competition. This hugh monopoly had a captive audience (who else
were you going to get a telephone line from) and didn't really have to
invest in their intrastructure. The early shareholders got fat, and BT
happily plodded on with charging whatever they could get away with.
Now with all of the competition around, it is too late to do anything about
it (without spending £bn laying fibre). Actually thinking about it, the 21CN
project should have incorporated FTTH instead of using exising copper (or in
some cases aluminium) wires.

Who knows where we would be if BT was still in the hands of the government.

I'd like to know how they get that figure. Maybe they're all in Helsinki ? For
£2.56 too ?

The whole article strikes me as being the usual frivolous media manipulation of
figures to draw an absurd conclusion.

Here are some REAL prices from Finland.

"price levels for broadband connections in Finland are currently among the most
competitive in the EU, with the average monthly rental for each connection speed
being substantially lower than the average for the 25 EU Member States. The monthly
rental for a 512 kbit/sec connection was EUR 21,20 (fourth cheapest), for a 1
Mbit/sec connection it was EUR 26,30 (fourth cheapest), and for a 2 Mbit/sec
connection it was EUR 35,07 (tenth cheapest). The lowest prices for DSL
subscriptions were found in Estonia, Italy, Lithuania and The Netherlands."
http://www.investinfinland.fi/news/2...1138694221720/

So it's NOT £2.56 for 21Mbps is it ? And the fastest speed quoted above is 2 Mbps.

In fact it's MORE than I pay here for 8Mbps ADSL.

Graham

That report is more that 18 months old. You talk about media manipulation,
but you've just found an article which is way out-of-date.

Who in their right mind would use an archive from Jan 2006 to check
current prices?

Jim.
