I'm not going to give the number as I'm sure someone will be daft enough
to call it. But I got home to find a message on the voicemail to call

07099 98xxxxx

To pick up a message. Being of a naturally suspicious nature I googled
it and found out it's a scam that can cost 50p a minute to call.

Obviously these guys are trying to make a fortune out of tricking
people, so beware !!

Would be more appropriate in uk.telecom (but do to give the whole
number, as a partial number is useless, when someone else may actually
be a network provider and could therefore act to stop them!)

Report it to consumer direct or trading standards they need info like
that.

You have been misled. Calls to 07 numbers are charged at mobile phone
rates from wherever you are calling, and for a blanket 50p/minute
charge they would have to use a premium rate number, which all begin
with 09. HTH.

Except that's incorrect. Personal number rates vary from local up to 50p
a minute, as far as I know. There are at least a dozen different rates,
as these 070 (nb not 077/078/079 which are mobile) are 'follow-me' type
numbers and part of the cost is to allow for routing to a mobile or
landline number (with those routing only to landlines, rates may
be a lot lower, 'd' or 'e' as far as I recall... 07020 are 'd'
rate costing ~17p peak and ~10p off-peak).

For 07099 98xxxxx

Magenta Systems (http://www.magsys.co.uk/telecom/codelook.asp) reports:

Operator: 24 Seven Telecom
Tariff Band: Personal Numbers 50p (pn2) (inc VAT)
Service: Personal

Your post is misleading, 07 numbers aren't just mobiles, 07099 definately
isn't.

Please don't spread misinformation yourself. 07 numbers are a lot more
than just mobiles. That one is a personal numbering number, rate pn2,
charged at 47.5 pence a minute (daytime, BT option 1 at any rate).

It's a complete misconception that all 07 numbers are mobile numbers. In
general, they are meant to be numbers attached to persons, whether by
mobile phone, personal numbering, or whatever.

47.5 pence a minute on BT option 1, daytime rates, VAT inclusive.

No, they are not. Mobile phone number start with 077, 078 or 079. 070 is
a different rating and is not far off 50p per minute.
